Shishu Mandir is a Children’s Project which was created by the Indo-German doctor couple Dwarka Das and Hella Mundhra in the city of Bangalore. It is an institution of its own consisting of a children’s Home, Schools and a Community College. The Home has chosen as its leading idea the idea of a big family. Children from poverty stricken families, often without a hope for survival, were taken in to receive the love and care of the Mundhra family and the staff of their hospital and with this they get a chance for their survival and education.
After a very modest beginning in one room of the 20-bedded hospital, two residential buildings could be bought in course of the time. The children receive an all round promotion, which aims at their educational growth as well as at their hidden talents to strengthen their extremely low self-confidence.
When the first children reached school going age, it became evident that these children were not able to follow the usual school system which had class strengths of up to 90 children. So Hella Mundhra ventured on an experiment with miniature classes of 10 children per class. Only children from the poorest strata of society were taken into this school and above all girls, who still have no access to a basic school education. In course of time, an own school building could be established for a maximum of 180 children. In addition a second school building and a Community College were inaugurated on January 1st 2008, when the Shishu Mandir celebrated its 25th anniversary. Apart from the regular classes the school offers workshops in the fields of carpentry, tailoring, computer application, swimming, cycling, basket ball, volley ball, table tennis and drama which all help in raising their self-esteem.
A successful school career is, however incomplete when the question of empowerment for life is raised. Without a professional education or vocational training the children still would be at o loss to master their lives successfully. Therefore the children are offered to attend a professional course, and only after completing this professional education Shishu Mandir's support will stop. In this way we hope that they escape from the vicious circle of poverty and illiteracy and get a real chance for their future.
